Does any county recognize Santa Muerte as an official religion in the jail, that you provide religious material for to inmates? For example, provide Holy Death Bibles and/or allow statutes to pray too? We have had a sudden influx of requests for this and my Jail Administrator would like to know what other jails are doing?

In Mower we do have a couple of Holy Death Bibles that we "Check Out" to inmates that request them. The goal as always is to have them returned to me upon their release. As of now we do not allow Statues, Medallions or other materials. Typically stating safety and security issues. As we do not allow crucifixes, scapular necklaces, or St. Medals.

We have never encountered that here, so I am not sure. I would have to look into it. I am sure we would get them their book/bible, but I am not sure that would get much more than that.

We have had several inmates that claim to have this religion. we have a couple religious books that they requested relating to the religion that we check out to the inmates upon request, and they turn them back in before they get released. We did allow one specific inmate the ability to keep his statue, but it was misused and turned into contraband, so we no longer allow this.

Dakota County: I have printed materials for Santa Muerta Prayer in both Spanish and English to give them. For their Bible if they want one, they have to have Family or friend send it to me in programs for them from Amazon or bookseller to programs for them for security inspection. No ribbons, stickers and has to be soft cover. If you call me 612-978-7867 cell / 651-438-4803 office. I can give you more information Pastor Jim Bzoskie, Chaplain
Here at Clay County, we have a few Santa Muerte books on hand inmates can borrow to read during there time here. These certain books need to be returned before they are released from custody. We had 1 inmate who we allowed to make a little alter in his cell. If he wanted to leave food “offerings” he had to do it with commissary food he purchased. Other then that, we normally don’t run into to many instances where inmates are demanding things.

We have one book they can request, but do not allow any statues. I typically refer to the Secretary of Defense list of recognized religions, Santa Muerta is not on the list. What I have found is that it is typically referred to as a cult, including the catholic church and the Mexican government.

We do not, but I will check into it, I'm sure it is coming our way. St. Louis County Chaplain here. There was someone almost a year ago, and I did a good amount of research at the time. It was decided that he couldn't take anything back into the unit about the santa, but I did bring him in to talk about her and why she was life-giving (saint of the outsiders and those cast away by society as she was non-judgmental) as well as dangerous (saint of the cartels because... non-judgmental). I'm still fascinated by her, but no one has asked since.
