I'd like to know what other counties policy/procedure is for programming facilitators having a criminal history. What crimes they accept? If there's crimes that have certain situations, length of time since conviction, etc?

Do you mean staff or volunteers?

Stearns reviews everybody on a case-by-case basis. Our initial standard is that volunteers will be excluded:
- If you have been incarcerated within the last five years - If you were on court probation or parole within the past three years - If you have pending court disposition for criminal charges

Ultimately even after all of these Jail Administration makes the final call. Drew Szyszkowski Mower County Jail Programs Coordinator 507-434-2718 drews@co.mower.mn.us

In Anoka we have the following requirements: - Have not been in our custody for five years. - Not on Probation or Parole - 2 years of sobriety for AA/NA - No pending criminal charges - Need to clear up any suspense files they have - We generally take any charges. The only person that we've denied, based on their charges, was someone who had to register as a sex offender.

In McLeod make them wait for two years after their last conviction to be allowed to come in to volunteer.

Tagging off Carlton-Steph's question...for the Facilities that utilize Certified Peer Recovery Specialists or specifically persons with "lived experience" who function in that capacity (but are unpaid)--do you have any "variance" policies or procedures you would be willing to share with us as we develop something like this in our facility? (Ex--crimes that normally would exclude someone but can be reviewed for allowance?)

For Crow Wing you have to be out of custody and sober for 2 years. If you are still on probation, we require a letter of recommendation from their probation officer. Each case is looked at but Crim Sex crimes would be a no for volunteering. If someone has a lengthy serious record, we would have administration approve or deny as well.
We have the peer recovery specialist but our volunteer has been out since 2008.
