It's that time of year again (joy). I have an inmate filing via paper but he is constantly asking for help and non of us here are tax professionals. What is the Jail's responsibility as far as filing taxes, do we need to provide forms, materials, etc? How do we get inmates the assistance they need to help file taxes? Thank you in advance

We will get them forms and have a few booklets that we will give them. This is all we have ever done. The rest is up to them as we are not tax professionals.

Here in Itasca, if they request any forms as far as Taxes, we treat it like a sort of "absentee ballot" situation. I will get whatever forms they request, and assist them in whatever way I can. It is on them (on their dime) to seek advice about any issues. If a tax professional wants to come in (very rare) and sit down with an inmate, I would facilitate that.

I will print the tax forms for the inmates if they know what form it is that they need. I do not research the form for them. I will print off what they ask for and that is it. Everything else is up to them.

If you have turnkey they just put the IRS.GOV website on the kiosk as a tab. You can not file on the kiosk but all the info is the website. We still provide paper tax forms for them to fill out but we will not help them fill it out for liability reasons.

Hello, This year we have had over 50 requests for assistance with filing 2020 taxes. The huge demand is due to the need to file 2020 taxes to get unreceived Stimulus Funds. I have ordered tax forms and instruction booklets from the IRS and will distribute them to anyone who requests it. I am not offering to assist with filling out the forms because I am not qualified to help people file taxes and due to COVID we are unable to bring in anyone from the community to help.
I reached out to contacts at the DOC, they are not providing tax assistance.

At Tri-County Community Corrections, we provide forms for the inmates to do their taxes. If they have a known release date before April 15th, we ask them to wait to do their taxes until they get out. We do NOT assist with filling out the tax forms. Like you said, we are not tax professionals.

Does anyone know if jails are required or mandated to provide tax forms?
