I was just informed yesterday that our Jail Chaplain of 39 years has decided to retire. Being that he has been our Jail’s Chaplain longer than I have been alive, I have no idea how to go about recruiting someone to fill the vacancy. I’m assuming I will conduct some sort of application/interview process, but I do not have any type of interview questions established, or an application to go off of outside of our normal volunteer application. I don’t even have a formal job description established. Our Chaplain was a volunteer, and knew how everything operated, so there wasn’t a whole lot we had to do for him. He managed to get his own funding through other churches and donors. Do other jails pay their Chaplains? Any information, forms, applications, job descriptions, etc. is greatly appreciated.

Our full time Chaplain is through Good News goodnewsjail.org/ Our chaplain said he is willing to talk to you about the program and lead you in the right direction if you want to go this route. His name is Chaplain John and can be reached at 612-596-8184. If he doesn't answer he is likely delivering bibles, leave him a message and he will get back to you. Good luck!!

Rice Co has a number of chaplains and religious volunteers. None are county employees or paid through the jail. I have contacted churches in the past to keep my volunteer list viable and, believe it or not, most of my contacts are quite willing to be Bible Study volunteers or on-call chaplains, as the needs arise. I will email you our generic volunteer packet if it's any help to you.

It might be worth reaching out to the DOC to see what their policy and hiring process is within the prisons. I don’t know how many counties actually staff chaplains. Obviously in the prison system that is a paid position, but they might be able to help with forms and job descriptions.

Otter Tail County has a jail chaplain through Jail inc. which is a local ministry funded by local churches and individuals. He is paid a certain amount through them to spend x amount of time at our jail and assisting inmates when needed. He currently works as a pastor at a church locally in town and is also an ex-inmate so he has an understanding of how to get through to our current population.
