We are looking at doing full virtual programming at Beltrami County from here on out, or at least until COVID isn’t the main topic of the media anymore. We have TV’s and computers set up in our programming rooms now, but we do not have them set up with ZOOM yet. I was wondering if there were other counties that were doing zoom programs, and how they are going about doing it? Do they use the free zoom option, or do they have multiple zoom subscriptions for their jail? Are they allowing programs to happen after program directors have gone home for the day? If so, who is put in charge of running the program? I’m sure I have other questions that I am missing. Here at Beltrami County, our programs department is technologically illiterate. Thank you for any help or insight.

We do as many programs by Zoom as possible. We have been doing this for several months and it works great. There are a few other counties in our area and we share programs. Zoom works great, several counties can be on at the same time. Our county does provide us with Zoom. We have had no issues and can see using this in the future.

We have been using the free zoom for our Parenting class. We connect to our large tv if we have more than one person (otherwise we just use our iPad). We will be expanding what we offer but are not going to do anything outside of our work hours right now.

We've been doing Zoom programming since last may or june. It's been working very well. We paid for one subscription, I think it was $150.00 for the year. We had IT set up an internet connection that does not involve our county network connection. We've done limited after hours programming as stafffing is usually an issue. It is my responsibility to schedule the meetings and send out the link to the volunteers. I usually schedule meetings 20 weeks out so I don't have to do it as often. If you want to chat about more specifics, email me at pat.scollard@co.aitkin.mn.us or 218-927-7355

Hennepin County IT will not allow us to use Zoom so I have had to create our virtual program classes using Microsoft Teams. Basically same as Zoom. We have created mobile carts with laptops, projectors, external camera, microphone and speakers to improve the quality of the video and audio. So far so good.

We applied for a CARES grant to install a bunch of virtual technology into our program rooms. So that being said we are just finishing the testing stages and we are working on a plan to start getting programs back into the jail. The biggest thing I have to figure out is how to get the staff trained on the new stuff.

We use ZOOM for our Teen Challenge, Bible Study, AA and Parenting classes. Works great, all free and gives a more personal touch vs You Tube lessons. Programming is very limited unless I am here to facilitate and I am only available 20 hrs/wk, but our inmate population is small and rotates constantly.

Dakota is using Zoom we have a paid account for GED prep, college prep, parenting inside out, coping with anger, and domestic abuse awareness. In person programs in our gym following guidelines, jail CD treatment, bible study, faith base parenting and anger class. I still have to have a programmer in the gym the whole time zoom programs are happening for security.

Kanabec is using Zoom for court (on their account) and we use WebEx (my account)for all other programs. We also used the CARES money and I was able to get a very nice system that works great with Zoom and WebEx and I am also able to go directly to YouTube for program specific videos. My suggestion to anyone still looking to build a system, don't cheap out. We were using a web cam with a built in microphone attached to a tv with network cables running everywhere. For court, I had to move the webcam so close to the inmate just to pick up their voice that the judge couldn't see the inmate.
