I’m looking to get some information about how other jails handle their laundry system. Currently in Beltrami County we do a laundry exchange twice a week. Each inmate is given 3 sets of clothes when they are booked in, each pod is given a communal laundry bag to send to the laundry room on their designated day. It’s not the most ideal way of doing things, but it has worked. Recently we have had an influx of laundry being flushed down the toilets, and have had to pay substantial amounts in plumbing bills. We are exploring other options to limit the amount of laundry in the Pods. We have thought about doing a more regular exchange of laundry. Possibly every day. Are there other jails that have been doing this? If so, how does it work? Thank you for any feedback we can receive.

Otter Tail issues two sets of clothing with 4 boxers. Each bunk has a laundry bag. Dirty laundry is collected daily in the morning and laundered in the bag and returned clean in the evening. Sundays is bedding exchange, 1 for 1.

Crow Wing currently does a 1 for 1 laundry exchange every night, with the outer clothes being exchanged every other night. We do have issues with the 1 for 1 not being done correctly or inmates somehow gaining extra clothing that staff seem to find during most shakedowns. We are exploring another option of going to assigned laundry bags where each new intake would be issued 2 sets of clothes and they can turn their clothes in to be washed in their laundry bag at a designated time each day. Once washed and dried, the clothes would be returned to the housing unit and inmates can collect their bags back. We are not to that point yet, just exploring the option.

Stearns does a item for item exchange for all General Population inmates every two days with inmates allowed to have two sets in their cells. Segregation inmates do a one for one exchange during their daily show / out of cell time. Linen and mask exchange is done weekly.

Hennepin County does clothing exchange twice per week and they get one set of clothes per exchange. Laundry is also done twice per week, one for one.
