Good Morning,
We were just informed by our barber of 15 years that she will not be coming back to cut hair here at the jail. Since we can’t go out and find a new one right now we are working on a contingency plan for allowing access to the clippers (this wouldn’t take place until the rest of the state can get a haircut).
Please share your policy/procedure for allowing inmates access to the hair clippers. Do you charge? We currently allow inmates to use the clippers if they have been indigent for 30 days.
Thanks – Stay Well!

We charge our county inmates $1, free if indigent for 7 days AND have court coming up. DOC boarders aren’t charged. I was going through a lot of clippers until I bought Wahl pet clippers, I can easily get 6-8 months of hard use out of them before they need to be replaced. They can handle a couple good falls as well.

In Meeker County we provide access to the Clippers once a week on specified day and time. We don't have a fee. We have had good luck with the Wahl clippers. (keep the blade oiled!)

We have the clippers available every day. No fee. They just need to clean it and clean up after it. We have had no issues, but we do go through our clippers about every 3-4 months. Looking good leads to feeling good right? It’s been a good thing here. Might need to check out this indestructible version.

Inmates have to be here for 2 weeks before they can get haircut. Then wait another 2 weeks before they are eligible for another haircut. 2 haircuts a month.
We charged $3 to their account whether they are indigent or not. If they have the money we take it, if they don’t their account goes negative $3.
We have 2 inmate barbers, they are the only one’s allowed to handle the clippers. Inmates are not allowed to cut their own hair. If they don’t want to use the barbers we provide then they will not get a haircut.
We have tried several different approaches to haircuts. This most recent one has worked well for us and we have brought in quite a bit of money that has allowed us to purchase quality clippers.

I tried the indestructible one, might have been a different brand but my inmates found a way to destroy them. Ours seem to get dropped on the blades a lot. The Wahl clippers (U-Clip deluxe red/chrome, $24.95) I was getting aren’t available on Amazon and have been replaced. Mine don’t have the dog on them, the new ones do.

Greeting from Becker County!
We have not had a barber for about 15 years. We have multiple hair clippers that inmates may use for $3.00 per haircut. Indigent inmates are allowed a haircut only if they are going a trial for their court case. The ICWC crew bought their own and keep it in their housing unit and are responsible for its care and cleanliness. All others are charged for haircuts. The inmate is advised that unless they have enough money in their account to pay for haircuts for everyone in their housing unit, not to share it out. They are also informed that the clipper needs to be sanitized between uses. The inmate sends a kyte to request the chipper on the next day the inmate has laundry exchange. The haircut must be completed and cleaned up prior to housekeeping, which inmates do early in the morning and before laundry exchange. In between cuts, they are cleaned and charged to be ready for the next use. We also use heavier duty Wahl clippers.

Stearns didn’t have much luck with the Remington “indestructible” clippers. We went through 2 pairs in around 8 months. Since we have designated specific inmate barbers the clippers have been holding up much better. We decided to go all in on clippers and purchased a pair of Osters that ran around $175. Prior, we almost always went with Wahl brand and they work decent for us.
Just out of curiosity do any counties offer “liner” clippers? We recently have been discussing getting a pair. Inmates are always asking for us to get some.
Thanks

In Douglas County we provide inmates access to our Wahl clippers (and trimmers) a couple times a week. We get ours from Target.

We allow our inmates to use the clippers once a week. We have a scheduled day and time for each unit. We have had good luck with the Wahl Clippers. We can get about 6-8 months with them, (keep the blade oiled as that helps extend the life!)

We do not allow clippers. They took those away years ago when there was an issue with the barber association and it changed to needing a barber with a traveling license. We had a barber that came in once a month for $15. She is no longer going to come back after COVID so we will be looking for another barber. Indigent do not receive haircuts. If someone has a trial, their attorney needs to get it set up to have a licensed barber come in and cut it if they can't do it on our scheduled day.

I am wondering how other counties are completing hair pre and post covid. I had a long email with the Minnesota Board of Barber Examiners. "In order to comply with state law and rule, a county correctional facility would have to register as a barber shop in order to offer barbering services for compensation. They key word here is compensation. If you were to find someone to volunteer their services in your facility, you would not have to register your facility as a barber shop. We would, however, recommend a registered barber or cosmetologist as they would be familiar with the sanitation requirements of offering those services. The last thing you want in your facility is an outbreak of a disease due to careless sanitation procedures. The only other correctional facility we have a registered entity inside is MCF-St.Cloud. They operate a barber school in that facility. Also Anoka Metro Regional Treatment Center, but they aren’t really a correctional facility."
With that said post covid we have just been allowing inmates to sign up to use the hair clippers in our gym bathroom, following cleaning protocols. Do any counites bring in a barber to cut hair at a cost to the inmate? This is one of those situation that pre covid it was just the way we did it. We had a barber come in on Saturday and charged the inmates $15 for a hair cut. Now that is going to change most likely since we are not a registered barber shop. All the requirements are located mn.gov/boards/assets/2020%20new%20Barber%20Shop%20Application_tcm21-420725.pdf#False
Thanks for any thoughts on the subject.
